Web Design Class for High School Students

In this web design course, high school students learn first-hand how websites are designed and created, and explore what makes a good user experience. Led by professional web designers, students discover the principles of successful UX (user experience) design, exercise creative project planning, create beautiful visual designs, and bring their designs to life in a final interactive website. No prior design or coding experience is necessary for this program.

The web design course for high school students and middle school students also includes the basics of the language behind the web, HTML and CSS, along with planning and visual design aspects of web design.  Students interested in more experience with web programming should consider the Web Development Summer Program, either separately, or as a next step upon completion of this course. This web design class is offered both in the summer and as an after-school program during the school year.

Web design course for high school students topics:

• What makes a good website
• Designing a great user experience
• Structuring a website’s content
• Principles of strong visual design
• Typography on the web
• Preparing images for the web
• Creative problem-solving in web projects
• Introduction to HTML and CSS

Apps used for the web design class for high school students:

• Adobe Photoshop for image editing
• Adobe XD for site prototyping
• Code editing such as Sublime Text, Dreamweaver, or Notepad++

By the end of the web design course, students will have gained:

• Knowledge of UX (user experience) and visual design principles
• Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS and how websites work
• Insight into the opportunities and challenges of a career in web design
• A final website showcasing their work

The after-school class section meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm EST.

6:00 pm - Workshops start: learn new topics and techniques from live instructor

6:45 pm - Complete practice exercises

7:00 pm - Learn new topics and techniques

7:30pm - Individual or collaborative project work

7:45 pm - Complete, review and share projects

8:00 pm - Class ends

10:00 am - Workshops start: learn new topics and techniques from live instructor

10:30 am - Complete practice exercises

10:45 am - Morning break

12:30 pm - Individual or collaborative project work

12:45 pm - Complete, review and share projects
