Why you should learn PowerPoint design

Why you should learn PowerPoint design

by Jennifer Smith

Learning PowerPoint design provides you with a valuable skill that are an investment in your career. While PowerPoint is widely used across a number of professions including graphic design, sales, and marketing, the skills behind how to create great presentations are not learned. This is like learning to use a hammer without knowing how to read architectural plans - you might know the tool, but the big-picture is missing. Mastering PowerPoint design can open doors to exciting opportunities and higher earning potential.

PowerPoint is used for creating slideshows and presentations, and is used for visually communicating ideas and data with slides, animations, charts, and multimedia. It's widely used for creating and delivering presentations, reports, and training materials. PowerPoint is used across many industries including education, business, healthcare, and entertainment. Because it is part of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, it is widely used along with related tools like MS Word and Excel.

Benefits of Learning PowerPoint Design

Learning PowerPoint design helps to improve communication as it makes it easier to convey complex information visually. It can make your content both more engaging and memorable. PowerPoint design  makes it possible to create and import compelling visuals and infographics into slides and presentations. PowerPoint design skills can set you apart in job applications and promotions, as it's a required skill for many jobs.

PowerPoint design for beginners

If you're new to PowerPoint design , you can learn by taking a PowerPoint Design class at AGI and become skilled in just a single day. If you decide to learn on your own, here are some things beginners will want to learn so they can work independently:

Creating and Formatting Slides: This skill is fundamental because it allows you to structure your presentation effectively. You can organize your content, decide on the order of information, and create a visual hierarchy to guide your audience through your message.

Adding Text, Images, and Multimedia: Incorporating text, images, and multimedia elements like videos or audio enhances your presentation's appeal and effectiveness. Text provides context, images make content more engaging, and multimedia can help explain complex ideas or concepts.

Using Templates and Themes: Templates and themes provide consistent visual design throughout your presentation. They save time and effort by offering professionally designed layouts, fonts, and color schemes, ensuring that your presentation looks polished and cohesive.

Mastering Slide Transitions and Animations: Slide transitions and animations add dynamism and interactivity to your presentation. They can help maintain audience engagement by controlling when and how information is revealed, making your presentation more visually appealing and memorable.

Saving and Sharing Your Presentations: Knowing how to save your work in different formats and share it with others is essential for collaboration and distribution. PowerPoint allows you to save your presentations in various formats (e.g., PDF, PPTX) and share them via email, cloud storage, or presentation platforms, making it accessible to your target audience.

Advanced PowerPoint design techniques

If you have existing PowerPoint experience, you may benefit from improving the design process with the PowerPoint Design courses from AGI. In these design-focused classes, you can explore advanced techniques including:

Building a Design Workflow: A design workflow ensures consistency and efficiency in your PowerPoint presentations. By establishing a structured process for creating and editing slides, you can maintain a cohesive visual identity, save time, and produce professional-looking presentations.

Creating Templates: Templates serve as a foundation for consistent design and content structure across multiple presentations. They help maintain brand identity and make it easier to adhere to company or organization standards. Creating and using templates ensures that your presentations have a polished appearance.

Creating Custom Animations and Transitions: Custom animations and transitions allow you to control the visual flow of your presentation. You can emphasize key points, create smooth transitions between slides, and add interactivity, making your presentation more engaging and memorable for your audience.

Collaborating with Others: Real-time collaboration is helpful when working on presentations with a team of collaborators. Cloud-based PowerPoint tools enable multiple users to edit and comment on presentations simultaneously. This fosters collaboration, speeds up the revision process, and ensures that everyone is working with the latest version of the presentation, regardless of their location.

Jobs that use PowerPoint design

PowerPoint skills can boost your career prospects and income potential. Some of the careers that frequently use PowerPoint include graphic designers, web designers, marketing and sales professionals. Here’s how they use PowerPoint:

Graphic designers use PowerPoint for creating marketing materials, informational graphics, and digital assets. The average salary for graphic designers in the US is approximately $50,000 per year according to government collected data by the Bureau of Labor Statistic (BLS).

Web designers use PowerPoint to share ideas relating to website layouts and interactive elements. Their median annual income is around $80,000  according to the BLS.

Marketing: PowerPoint is a staple in marketing for creating presentations, reports, sales materials, and advertising materials. Marketing managers can earn up to $127,000 per year according to the BLS.

In today's technology-focused job market, learning PowerPoint design is useful way to set yourself apart from others who may only know how to use the tool, but not how to design effectively. As you gain PowerPoint design skills, you can advance your career while gaining a creative outlet for communicating.
