How long does it take to learn video editing

by Edward Smith

Anyone can learn the basics of video editing in as little as two days, as well as more advanced skills in several additional days, provided they have the assistance of instructors who have decades of experience in the film, television, and digital media industries.

The speed at which you can learn video editing will be influenced by your familiarity with other applications that are similar to professional-grade video editing applications like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut. If you’re already confident working in post-production and photo editing applications like After Effects and Photoshop, you will be able to learn the concepts and techniques of video editing more easily. Those with no prior experience should anticipate needing more time to get comfortable navigating the interface and creating projects in video editing applications. For complete beginners, it’s helpful to find introductory video editing courses that can guide you through the basics.

Learning how to edit video may take slightly longer for those who want to learn advanced techniques, such as multicam editing, animation, and color correction. If your goal is to learn basic video editing skills, it will only take a few days of training before you are ready to start creating projects on your own. However, if you’re aiming to master editing techniques used by industry professionals, you will need several days of advanced training and additional time to practice what you’ve learned.

How long does it take to learn video editing online

Online video editing courses from the American Graphics Institute (AGI) make it possible to learn video editing in less than a week. AGI offers introductory and advanced courses on Premiere Pro and Final Cut, all of which are two days in length. Even if you want to complete a more comprehensive video editing course with AGI, you can still learn the necessary skills in four days. While each of AGI’s courses cover different video editing applications and skills, each course gives you the opportunity to engage directly with your instructor, share your screen, learn in small groups, and use on-screen chats.

How long does it take to learn video editing in a classroom

With locations in multiple cities across the United States, you can take video editing courses in person with AGI instructors and become proficient in less than a week. All of AGI’s in-person video editing courses give students the opportunity to receive immediate feedback from experts who have authored training books, as well as participate in hands-on exercises and projects. Those who prefer small classroom settings might find it easier to master the fundamentals of video editing, such as three-point editing, media organization, and exporting projects, in a structured learning environment. Additionally, AGI provides students with the necessary computers and software for each course.

How long does it take to earn a video editing certificate

Anyone interested in earning a video editing certificate from AGI will need to complete seven courses on Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, and digital imaging, totaling approximately 90 hours of class time. Depending on your schedule, budget, and goals, you may complete this certificate program as a full-time student in four weeks, or as a part-time student over the course of a few months. AGI’s video editing certificate program can be taken by people who have a variety of different schedules, with courses available on weekdays, weekends, and nights.

Do you learn video editing faster if you know After Effects or Photoshop

Those who feel confident working in Adobe Creative Cloud applications like After Effects and Photoshop will have existing skills that they can use when learning video editing. Framing, visual effects, storytelling, and color correction are all important skills that After Effects and Photoshop users will need to utilize when working in video editing applications. Additionally, the Premiere Pro interface will feel less overwhelming to navigate if you have prior experience with other Adobe applications.

Resources for learning video editing

Although it is possible to learn video editing through trial and error, it is incredibly challenging to learn without guidance from trained professionals. Thankfully, there are countless training options available for those who want to quickly learn the necessary skills. Anyone who wants to create professional-grade projects should consider enrolling in video editing courses.

AGI offers several video editing courses with hands-on exercises and projects on a monthly basis, which can be taken either online or in person. All of AGI’s video editing courses take less than a week to complete and are led by live instructors who have experience in film, television, and digital media production.

For example, AGI’s introductory Final Cut course is a two-day crash course on basic video editing techniques, such as importing media, arranging clips in the timeline, and adding transitions. For users who have prior experience with video editing applications, AGI also offers advanced courses for both Final Cut and Premiere Pro.

Even though learning a complex skill like video editing can be overwhelming if you try to learn on your own, AGI’s courses and training methodology make the learning process much smoother.
