How Difficult is it to Learn PowerPoint

by Jennifer Smith

Despite it being such a widely used app for creating presentations, many people find it difficult to learn PowerPoint. The reasons PowerPoint can be difficult to learn include the many capabilities and nested functionality that are hidden within menus, ribbons, and tabs. Those who are new to PowerPoint can find it to be complex, and often find it challenging to grasp the basics. Fortunately, with the right approach and resources, learning PowerPoint can be made more manageable, especially with PowerPoint training courses that can get you up-and-running quickly. For many users, a single day of PowerPoint training can eliminate weeks of trial-and-error, frustration, and searching through videos.

The Complexity of Learning PowerPoint

Learning PowerPoint is often considered challenging due to it being used to write, organize, and edit ideas, or create layouts for posters or flyers. As a presentation package, PowerPoint isn’t intended for these tasks. Learning approaches to organizing your ideas, and the intended uses of PowerPoint can help you to use it more effectively. These types of skills are covered in a PowerPoint Design course.  Additionally, learning to apply transitions, animations, use templates, and apply consistent themes saves you time and makes your presentations look more professional.

The time it takes to learn PowerPoint varies depending on prior experience and the skills they need to learn. Comprehensive classes help to speed the learning process. These courses provide expert guidance, and hands-on projects, and a live instructor to answer questions and significantly reduce the time and effort required to learn PowerPoint.

Prerequisites and Required Skills for PowerPoint

Before you start learning PowerPoint, it's important to have a solid foundation in basic computer skills. You will need to understand the fundamentals of operating a computer, whether it's running on Windows or MacOS. This includes understanding how to use a mouse or touchpad, navigating through the operating system, opening and saving files and navigating through folders. If you have these skills, it will be much less difficult to learn PowerPoint

Skills to focus on when learning PowerPoint

To learn PowerPoint more quickly, you can focus on certain areas:

  • PowerPoint Navigation: Start by familiarizing yourself with the PowerPoint interface, including the ribbon, slide sorter, and slide master.
  • Creating Slides: Learn how to create and format slides, add text, images, and shapes.
  • Design Principles: Understand design principles like layout, color, and typography to create visually appealing slides. This will make your slides look professional and help you communicate your messages more clearly.
  • Master Slides: Use master slides to maintain consistent branding and design elements throughout your presentation.

Easing the process of learning PowerPoint

After completing a course or initial training, it's important to continue using the app regularly to practice building presentations and organizing content. The more you work with PowerPoint, the shorter time it will take for you to become proficient. PowerPoint is a skill that benefits from practice. You can experiment with different capabilities and create presentations to reinforce your skills. While learning PowerPoint may seem challenging, it's a skill that you can master with dedication and practice.
