What is After Effects

Adobe After Effects is a software application used for creating motion graphics and special effects that are used in video, broadcast, commercials, and presentations. After Effects is widely used in broadcast and film post-production for the creation of special effects, animation, and video compositing. Projects created using After Effects can be shared in online video, television, movies, displays, digital billboards, and kiosks. After Effects is part of the Adobe Creative Cloud.

After Effects can be used to design titles that display before or after a television show or movie, create cartoon characters, and apply animation. It is primarily used to apply effects after video has been edited, and can also be used to create animation and motion graphics from static objects such as logos or artwork created in other applications. After Effects is used to create visually appealing motion graphics that enhance a presentations and  stories.

The primary uses of After Effects are divided into three categories: Animation, Effects, and compositing. Read more about what is After Effects,

After Effects versions

Adobe After Effects was invented in 1993 and originally came from the Company of Science and Art (COSA) in Rhode Island. It was only available for Mac-based computers and was limited in its capabilities, which included layered compositing with mask, effect, transforms and keyframes. After Effects Version 1.0 was released by COSA in January 1993. COSA was acquired by Aldus, and then Adobe acquired Aldus. The first Adobe release of Adobe After Effects was version 3.0. Since including After Effects as part of the Creative Cloud, the product is simply known as After Effects CC, and adobe adds incremental updates to the app each year. For example, After Effects CC 2021 added real-time draft preview for 3D projects, and additional team capabilities. After Effects CC 2022 added changes to rendering and the render queue.

Why After Effects skills are useful

After Effects skills make a creative professional more marketable for roles in digital design and video editing. Jobs that use After Effects include filmmakers, video editors, post production engineers, video and motion graphics editors, and television producers. Graphic designers also benefit from knowing After Effects, as they build presentations, and knowing After Effects makes it possible to take a static presentation and transform it into an engaging animated presentation.

Government data shows that jobs for those with After Effects skills are growing and in demand.

Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that there is growing need for After Effects skills working in the fields of animation and video.
